Exploring Local Food Potential: Sustainable Business and Smart Eating for Teenagers

RISE Foundation, in collaboration with Hotel Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta, held an Interactive Talk Show on Saturday, September 7, 2024, as part of the commemoration of International Youth Day 2024. This event carries the theme “Exploring Local Food Potential: Sustainable Business and Smart Eating for Teenagers,” which aims to inspire teenagers to be more actively involved in promoting local food and implementing healthy eating patterns.

This event was attended by more than 30 teenagers aged 15-24 years, and supported by various partner organizations that came to enliven the event such as Generasi Pintar, Where There be Dragons, and Sa Perempuan Papua. Mr. Herman Courbois, General Manager of Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta opened the Talk Show and expressed his pride in being able to be involved in organizing this event with teenagers.

Artin Wuriyani, Executive Director of RISE Foundation, in her speech also said that, “RISE Foundation is committed to providing more support for a healthy lifestyle for teenagers, not only physically, but also from their diet and contribution to environmental sustainability. Through this event, we hope to be able to further explore the potential of local food and smart eating as the first step to a healthier and more sustainable life”.

The discussion event was opened with an interesting discussion about the importance of a wise diet and sustainable food business, which presented two main speakers, namely, Assyifa Nuraini, DIY Health Ambassador, and Stefani Maria, Content Creative Manager from JogJamu. Both speakers were chosen because they were experienced and close to the theme raised.

In the talk show session, Assyifa Nuraini shared her experience in promoting a healthy lifestyle to teenagers, while Stefani Maria discussed more about the importance of maintaining the potential of local herbal medicine as part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage. Through this discussion, teenagers were given a new perspective so that they could be more aware in choosing food, and considering its impact on the surrounding environment.

The demo session on making herbal medicine and cooking was the highlight of the event that was successfully held at the Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta Hotel garden, where participants could learn directly how to utilize easily found local ingredients to make delicious and healthy dishes. The demo session on making herbal medicine was guided by JogJamu by introducing how to make Jamu Kunir Asem to the participants. Meanwhile, the cooking demo was guided by Chef Kolibin from Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta by teaching how to make local food dishes, namely Sate Lilit Tempe and Mushroom Meatball Curry.

Through this event, teenagers are expected to be able to develop new skills in processing local food and start thinking about sustainable business opportunities from the ingredients around them. The participants were very enthusiastic about watching how these local ingredients can be processed into delicious food to eat.

Kick Off the 2nd Year of KOPAJA

On the first day of the activity, the agenda began with remarks from RISE Foundation representatives and the reading and signing of the cooperation contract. The main session discussed reflections on the implementation of the Urban Futures 2024 programme, with discussions on obstacles, lessons learned, and improvements that need to be made in 2025. One of the major changes is the adjustment of the cooperation model with CAI organisations, where in the future, KOPAJA will no longer refer to one particular organisation in involving inclusivity. This change aims to open up wider collaboration opportunities with various other inclusion organisations.
