In a rapidly evolving social and political landscape, empowering youth with the tools to navigate challenges and express themselves safely is more critical than ever. The recent “Express Freely, Create Safely: Your Voice, Your Art, Your Space” event, a powerful collaboration between RISE Foundation, Generasi PINTAR, and Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta.
Concluded on a high note in Yogyakarta, leaving participants inspired and equipped with vital skills. This initiative, held to commemorate National Education Day, demonstrated a proactive approach to addressing the concerning trends in democratic quality and youth well-being in Indonesia.
The “Express Freely, Create Safely: Your Voice, Your Art, Your Space” event, held on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the Garden of Hotel Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta, was a resounding success, bringing together 35 young participants aged 15-24, alongside representatives from partner organizations and communities in Yogyakarta.

The inclusive nature of the event was evident, with participants actively engaging in discussions and workshops focused on the three pillars of holistic security: digital, physical, and psychosocial.
The interactive format of the day, incorporating methods like theatrical performances and journaling, ensured dynamic learning and deep engagement. The agenda flowed seamlessly:
- Digital Security (Stage 1): Participants engaged in a mini-workshop led by Kak Eni Puji Utami, gaining crucial insights into navigating the online world safely.
- Physical Security (Stage 2): Through engaging theatrical methods, Generasi PINTAR guided attendees in understanding and asserting their physical safety.
- Psychosocial Security (Stage 3): This session, also led by Generasi PINTAR, utilized creative and interactive approaches, including various journaling techniques like junk journaling and body emotion language, to explore emotional well-being and expression. The atmosphere was vibrant, described by one participant on Instagram as fostering “a safe space to pour out our feelings”.
The event commenced with welcome speeches from the General Manager of Royal Ambarrukmo Yogyakarta, the Executive Director of RISE Foundation, and Generasi PINTAR.
The active participation and positive feedback from attendees demonstrated the urgent need and high demand for such programs among Indonesian youth. The closing group photo captured the spirit of camaraderie and the sense of accomplishment shared by all involved.
