RISE Foundation once again demonstrates its commitment to empowering young people through the implementation of the Writing and Digital Security Training. This activity is part of the Urban Futures (UF) program series, a global initiative that focuses on strengthening urban food systems, engaging young people, and responding to the challenges of climate change.
Since 2023, RISE Foundation has actively supported young people in Bandung and West Manggarai through the Health Heroes Urban Futures community. This community serves as a platform for youth to learn about and advocate for Hak Atas Pangan dan Gizi (HAPG) while also encouraging digital participation through digital youth activism.
One of the platforms used is healtheroes.id, which provides a safe space for sharing ideas, writings, and campaigns on social issues, including food and nutrition. However, as the digital audience continues to grow, the need for effective writing skills and cybersecurity has become increasingly important. This is the background for organizing this training.
The Writing and Digital Security Training is designed to provide participants with fundamental knowledge and practical skills on effective, creative, and impactful writing techniques to voice issues and concerns they experience. In addition, the program aims to enhance participants’ digital literacy, particularly in information security (digital security), so they are able to protect their personal data and online activities. Furthermore, the training is expected to create synergy between writing skills and digital security, equipping participants to produce safe, credible content that contributes to strengthening positive narratives in digital spaces.
Through this training, participants are expected not only to produce written works published on healtheroes.id, but also to gain awareness of the importance of digital security. Moreover, the training seeks to build a creative network among participants, enabling collaboration in creating safe and impactful content.
The Writing and Digital Security Training was held online via Zoom Meeting on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, and Monday, September 15, 2025, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM (WIB).
On the first day, September 10, 2025, the focus was on the writing session, namely “Writing Social Issues with a Journalistic Perspective.” Kak Ira Rachmawati, a journalist at Kompas.com, delivered the material with the theme “Menulis dari Halaman Rumah.” Participants then joined a writing workshop, practicing how to determine an angle, outline their writing, and draft a short article. Afterwards, they were assigned to practice individual or group writing by drafting a short article.
On the second day, September 15, 2025, the session continued with the topic of digital security delivered by Kak Eny, a resource person specializing in cybersecurity. She presented the session “Digital Security for Activists and Writers,” where participants learned simulations on protecting accounts, devices, and personal data.
This activity is in line with a similar initiative carried out by UNESCO in collaboration with the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI). Through a program entitled “Equipping the Indonesian Student Press for the Digital Era,” UNESCO provided Indonesian student press with training in media literacy and digital security. The focus of this activity was to strengthen freedom of expression, journalistic ethics, as well as to build the digital resilience of young journalists against cyber threats such as doxxing and disinformation.
Through this training, RISE Foundation hopes that young people will become more skilled in voicing social issues through strong writing, while also becoming more resilient in protecting their digital security. The presence of young people as agents of change in the digital space is a great hope to strengthen positive narratives and expand the impact of the movement toward a sustainable food future.
