Creating Safe and Empowered Spaces: RISE Foundation Collaboration Empowers Teachers and Youth in Tangerang

tangerang

RISE Foundation, in collaboration with Project HOPE and supported by Kimberly-Clark Corporation, held an offline training for teachers and Health Heroes Facilitators (HHF) in the HER Way or SEKAR (Healthy, Knowledgeable, and Resilient) program. The event, which took place on January 27–28, 2026, at the Howard Johnson by Wyndham Tangerang Hotel, was a strategic step toward strengthening the resilience and well being of adolescent girls in Tangerang City through a life cycle approach. A total of 30 participants, consisting of 15 teacher representatives and 15 peer facilitators, were intensively prepared to become the spearhead of inclusive and youth-friendly reproductive health education in schools and communities.

The activity began with an emphasis on the importance of a solid support ecosystem for adolescents. In her speech, the Director of the RISE Foundation, Artin Wuriyani, highlighted the strategic role of teachers and HHF as the frontline in ensuring that adolescents receive accurate and gender-sensitive health information.

Similar support was expressed by Niken from the Banten Provincial Education Office, who emphasized that schools are crucial spaces for building comprehensive life skills. The event was then officially opened by the Regional Assistant II of the Tangerang City Government, Ruta Ireng Wicaksono, DR.Eng., Ir., S.T., M.Eng., who expressed the city government’s commitment to supporting collaborative programs that integrate the education and health sectors.

The training in Tangerang City is part of the implementation of the HER Way program, which is also being carried out in Bandung, Sidoarjo, and Banyuwangi Regencies, in line with the policies of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia.

The main focus of the training was on the first pillar, namely empowered adolescents, which includes mastery of menstrual hygiene management, sexual and reproductive health, mental health, and Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Teachers were positioned as institutional facilitators who create a safe learning space, while HHFs were encouraged to become information bridges and peer mentors who are relevant to the needs of today’s adolescents.

Over two days, participants were equipped with interactive learning methods such as value clarification, comfort continuum, group discussions, and role-playing. As a form of capacity building, a peer teaching session was held where teachers and HHF practiced their roles as facilitators using official modules from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the Ministry of Health, and the “About Us” module from the Ministry of Population and Family Development. Through these sessions, participants trained their sensitivity and participatory communication skills in conveying sensitive issues related to adolescent health.

To conclude, participants developed concrete Action Plans (RTL). Teachers will play a strategic role in conveying information and best practices to school principals and fellow teachers to support the integration of health materials into school learning.

Meanwhile, Health Heroes Facilitators are preparing to implement the Health Heroes Goes to School and Community program from February to April 2026. Through the synergy between the RISE Foundation, Project HOPE, and Kimberly-Clark Corporation, this training affirms a shared commitment to creating agents of change for a healthy, knowledgeable, and resilient generation of young women.
