The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is a Swiss-based foundation, formed at the UN general assembly in 2002 with the vision of a world without nutritional problems. GAIN works with governments, the private sector and civil society to improve the food system so that it provides more nutritious food for everyone, especially the most vulnerable.
Currently, GAIN is focused on providing education to increase critical awareness for the public, especially teenagers, regarding packaged food labels. This is because the majority of people consume processed foods which are at risk of increasing the burden of chronic diseases, this has implications for 60% of deaths worldwide. On the other hand, unhealthy eating patterns are a risk factor that can be prevented. Reading labels correctly and appropriately can have an impact on reducing the prevalence of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cancer, hypertension, and others. Individuals and society must be able to limit total consumption of calories, saturated fat, sugar and salt. One effort can be seen through processed food labels which aim to provide correct and clear information to the public about packaged food products (WHO, 2005).
Law Number 18 of 2012 concerning food, states that food management is carried out to fulfill basic human needs by providing benefits in a fair, equitable and sustainable manner based on food sovereignty, food independence and food security. As well as the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) Regulation Number 31 of 2018 concerning processed food labels, this regulation ensures the public’s rights regarding correct and clear information to the public about every processed food product that is packaged before purchasing or consuming it.
In fact, existing processed food labels have not been able to influence eating patterns, because food labels often include excessive things or disguise something, giving it an inappropriate meaning. On the other hand, the public’s critical awareness regarding food labels has not been well developed, currently public awareness is still at the level of looking at the expiry date of food, and there is no comprehensive information about the content/composition of the food.
Therefore, GAIN collaborates with RISE Foundation Indonesia to invite the participation of teenagers in making changes in society as advocates and facilitators (Health Heroes Facilitators) who will have a positive influence on society, especially their peers, to increase critical awareness of processed food labels and take joint action to make broader and more massive changes at the strategic level.
